The Best Hamantashen Recipe Ever

Purim is right around the corner and that means one thing:

HAMANTASHEN!

We're not talking about the "Little Hamantash" onesies in our Babies selection -- though we can't get enough of those, either.

We're talking about the fun, sweet, festive, good old fashioned Purim hamantashen. 

As Proud Jews, we can't get enough of those triangle pastries filled with jelly goo!

If you want a great hamantash from a traditional bakery, we recommend Breads Unlimited in Bethesda, Maryland.

But if you don't want to travel that far, try making our Aunty's recipe. We call it "Aunty's Rocken' Hamantashen" - as seen in this picture from the family cookbook.

Ingredients

  • 5 oz sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 4 fl oz vegetable oil
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Grated rind of a half orange
  • 3 cups of flour
  • 1.5 tsp baking powder

Instructions

Set one egg aside.

Whisk the other eggs. Combine whisked eggs with sugar, oil, vanilla extract, and grated orange rinds. Stir in flour until the mixture forms dough.

Roll out dough on a floured board until it's about 1/4 inch thick. Cut into 3 inch circles.

Place a spoonful of jelly or filling in the center of each circle.

Draw up three sides to form a triangle, then pinch the edges together to hold the shape.

Whisk the remaining egg in a small bowl. Brush the unbaked hamantashen lightly with the egg batter.

Bake on 350 degrees for a half an hour. Makes approximately 24 hamantashen.

To make it the way Aunty makes it, use maple syrup instead of sugar (same amount). And, use fruit-juice sweetened jam for the filling.
