Two Reasons to Love Sukkot

Sukkot, Sukkot, Sukkot!

(Or as some people say, "suckas.")

Now that you've been written in the Book of Life, relax and enjoy some good food and happy company in a three-and-a-half-sided tent!

Sukkot honors the wandering of the ancient Israelites after they escaped Egypt. For 40 years they slept in semi-permanent tents, and the old rabbis said if they could do it for 40 years, dammit, we can do it for a week!

Of course few of us sleep in our sukkot. We just eat there and hang out sometimes.

Two Reasons to Love Sukkot

1. You get to get shakin'

Did you know the Lulav and Etrog symbolize the end of the harvest season? No? You thought we shake them for fun?

No! In old days, Jews shook the lulav and etrog in hopes of a good harvest. Shake it to the left, shake it to the right, up up down down.

(Actually, This Is How You Shake a Lulav and Etrog.)

If you don't do this, we highly recommend it -- and our kids think it's fun. PS -- How to Buy a Lulav and Etrog, a nice summary from our friends My Jewish Learning.

2. You get 18% off your order!
